Activities
Shopping is one of the main activities while in Niamey. At the Katakou market on Tillaberi Road, visitors can find a variety of household goods, tools and food. While in the tourist season visitors can find bags of locust or lumps of acacia gum, a chewable resin from certain acacia trees. There is also a ‘dead man's' market area selling used clothing, mostly donated clothing from Western countries. The Wadata Artisan market, not to be confused with the local Wadata market just down the street, was built with aid from Luxembourg. The main building has shops selling many of the local crafts at reasonably set prices. Crafts include leather boxes, shoes, jewellery, fabrics and clothing, pottery, baskets and so on. It is a good place for visitors to get an idea of prices, and decide where to start bargaining.
Niamey has some good restaurants frequented by tourists. The Maquis 2000 serves traditional African food. This open-air restaurant is very popular among the locals as well. Hotel Les Roniers located about seven kilometres from the American Embassy serves good French food.
